ATeam Cathouse Project

Project Lakki Cat House

A heartfelt Project for the street cats

20260516_191236

A small safe place for the street cats living outside the Marina Evros on Leros – built in 2025.
The cathouse is not an official animal shelter. There is no proper shelter for cats on Leros – the care for the street cats is almost entirely managed by private individuals, volunteers and local animal lovers.

Quick Facts

More than 30 street cats live in the area outside the marina

Those cats are fed regularly by our project

Bowl Refill is always welcome – feel free to fill empty bowls

Please do not feed chicken bones or spoiled leftovers

A transfer carrier is available in the Cathouse for vet visits – just return it after use

How you can help

Refill food bowls

The cats are cared for regularly – but whenever a bowl is empty, they always are grateful for more cat food. Or you can use the food in the donation box to feed other cats in need on the island.

Food donation box

There is a food donation box at the cathouse. Dry and wet food in cans  left there and are very welcome!

Donate or support our GoFundMe

Vet costs, medication, neutering and food are privately funded. If you would like to help, you can either donate directly (Infos on the sidebar) or support the project through our GoFundMe Seite
Every small contribution helps the cats directly and makes a big difference. Help us to make this project bigger.

Support neutering

Dedicated helpers, sailors and long-term visitors can actively support the project.
Without neutering, the number of street cats grows very quickly. Many animals suffer from illness, hunger or injuries. Neutering prevents suffering, reduces diseases and helps the cats already living there to have a safer and healthier live.

On Tuesday mornings, cats can be neutered at the vet KONTRAFOURIS MICHAIL for 20,- Euros, male cats cost 50,- Euros. After surgery, the cat must stay overnight under observation insiode the carrier with the rescuer before being released again. Here you can find the information for the vet: Leros Veterinary Centre

Street cats on Leros - the reality

Behind the idyllic alleys and harbours of Leros , many street cats struggle daily with hunger, illness and a lack of protection

Without the help of caring people, many of them would hardly stand a chance.
Helping the street cats means:
daily feeding rounds, early morning vet visits, providing medication, kitten watch duties and caring for sick animals. And also feeling helpless – because you wish you could give every furry soul a real home, away from the struggle of surviving on the strees.
Some cats need antibiotics, some urgently need help because of accidents – and for many, sadly, help often comes too late. But giving up is not an option, even though it is an endless amount of work. Every refilled bowl of food or water, every rescued cat, every treated animal, every kitten taken in and every successful neutering makes a huge difference and saves lives.

How the cathouse was created

The idea for the cat house came during our daily feeding rounds at the marina cats.
We wanted to do more than just providing food, medication and caring for neutering them. We wanted to give them a real protection and at the same time raise awareness for the situation of street cats in general.

Over several weeks, we collected materials: old wood, discarded doors, pallets from the local vegtable shop. Some things were donated, some we exchanged, and others we invested in ourselves.
Thanks to the generous supporters from the sailing community and from our hometown Landshut, we were able to build a weatherproof shelter: mats, polyester resin, screws, glue, acrylic sealants, insulation materials and protective foils. For one whole week we built, adjusted, sealed and reinforced everything. With dirty hands, lots of love and always supervised by curious cat eyes. For the winter the cats even got self-warming mats. The cats accepted their house from day one. And that showed us that every bitof effort was worth it.

This project exists because of personal responsibility, didication and a lot of heart.
At the same time we are incredibly thankful for every small donation that helps us continue the cat house project, cover costs and -whenever possible- carefully expand our help. Wether it is food for a few days, veterinary costs for injuries or illnesses: every contribution helps!
